Understanding body condition

A guide, not a diagnosis.

5 / 9 · Side and top views of a dog with a visible waist and moderate abdominal tuck.
5 / 9 · Ideal

1–3 · Below ideal

Ribs feel prominent with little covering. The waist and abdominal tuck are pronounced.

4–5 · Ideal

Ribs can be felt beneath a thin covering. A waist is visible from above and the abdomen rises toward the hips.

6–9 · Above ideal

Ribs are harder to feel as covering increases. The waist and abdominal tuck become less visible.

Assess by sight and touch. If unsure, ask your veterinarian.
